10 Reasons To Regularly
Service Your Caravan

Australian Road into the sunset while on camping trip in Caravan.

When was your last caravan service? We all know it has to be done, but it can be a task that easily gets pushed back and forgotten about. Regardless of your feelings towards servicing your caravan, it is a very important task. Let’s take a look at why.

How often should I service my caravan?

A lot of people are aware that they need to service their caravan, however, they are not necessarily aware at just how often they should be getting their van serviced. Getting your caravan serviced applies to all caravans, whether you are constantly travelling, use it occasionally or have it in storage. When you need to get your van serviced depends on a few factors, including the age of the van, how often you use the van or when you last had your van serviced.

As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended to service your caravan every 10,000km travelled or every 12 months, whichever occurs first.

Tip

Tip

Use a logbook to help you keep track of dates and km’s travelled. New caravans come with the dealers log book, otherwise there are logbooks you can buy. If paper is not your thing as it can easily be misplaced, why not try a logbook app. Simply search the app store or google play.

What are the different types of servicing available?

Generally, there are 3 types of caravan servicing:

1- First Service- applies to new caravans. This is usually specified by the manufacturer and should usually occur at approximately 1,000km travelled.

2- Standard Service– every 10,000km or every 12 months.

3- Major Service– every 2-3 years. Major service is essential for checking your caravans seals for leaks as well as your battery system, on top of your standard service elements.

What is the difference between a single axle service and a tandem or dual axle service?

Some caravans have one axle with 2 wheels while others are dual axle or tandem axle which means there are two axels with 4 wheels. Depending on what your caravan has, will determine what you will pay. As a dual axle has more wheels and thus moving parts, it is more work, and will incur additional costs accordingly.

What is included in a service?

Servicing varies between dealers and repairers, however, the concept is the same; to rectify any wear and tear. As a result, regular servicing ensures that all the moving parts remain moving and all the parts that should be fixed remain fixed and safeguards the correct functioning of your van as a whole.
