Honey Soy Chicken

While many people use the store bought sauces, I have always loved how simple and delicious this honey soy sauce is to make. Use with your favourite type of chicken, whether it be breast, thighs, tenders, wings or legs, or make up your own kebabs. The best bit is you can make ahead or even freeze ready to feed your next adventure.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams Chicken breast, tenders, thigh, wings, drumsticks

Marinade

  • cup Honey
  • cup Soy Sauce
  • 1 tbsp Sesame Oil + extra for cooking
  • 1-2 tsp Chilli Fakes or you can use fresh red chilli finely chopped
  • Handful Shallots finely chopped

Optional extra

  • 1-2 tsp Sesame Seeds

Instructions

  • Mix all marinade ingredients together.
  • Add chicken and let marinate for 30 min to 4 hours.

For tenders, thighs, breast

  • Heat your pan through. Add sesame oil.
  • Place chicken in the hot pan on a med-high heat, cooking both sides for approx 30 seconds to sear.
  • Reduce heat to low-med to further cook the chicken for approx 5-10 minutes each side, until you have a dark browned colour and chicken is cooked through.

For drumsticks or wings

  • Preheat oven to 180°C.
  • Add some oil to a baking tray. Add chicken pieces and spread across tray evenly.
  • Cook for 25-40 minutes, rotating the chicken halfway through.

To Serve

  • Sprinkle chicken with sesame seeds, extra shallots and chilli flakes
  • This honey soy chicken can be enjoyed:
    - on its own
    - added to a salad
    - with rice
-with noodles and some stir fried veggies

Notes

Note 1- When cooking on the stove, the high heat can burn the sugar in the honey which is why it is recommended to reduce the heat and to cook slowly after the initial sear.
Note 2- Cooking time will vary depending on the sizes of your chicken pieces. If using chicken breast, it is recommended to  cut the breast in half lengthwise. Chicken wings are generally smaller and will take less time to cook through then chicken drumsticks.
Note 3- If you don't have any sesame oil you can substitute with peanut or olive oil, however, much of the delicious taste is attributed to the sesame oil.
