DIY Trail Mix

When trying to plan while you are on the road, it can be so easy to overlook some of the more simple solutions. When it comes to food, this is no exception. But simple equals easy, and often we can find ourselves thinking it surely can’t be this easy right? Well yes it can. So when you are looking for an easy snack, look no further than our DIY trail mix. Traditionally trail mix is a mixture of seeds, nuts and dried fruits, and for many people out there, including kids, this may seem like the worst snack idea of all time. However, let’s get creative and make a custom mix that is sure to prevent the dreaded “muuuuuuum, I’m hungry” comments. The best part is that everyone in the family can have their own trail mix with the bits they like, and not the bits they don’t.  For young children it is a good way to encourage them to eat some of the more healthy snack options, while also giving them some of the self reward yummier snack options. You don’t have to stick with the one mix either, why not mix it up from time to time so you don’t get bored.

There are a couple ways you can do this, and it will depend on your family dynamics and what space you have.

Firstly, you may simply mix your selections into one big batch that can then be used to top up or refill you snap lock bag or snack container. Secondly you can keep on hand a few of your options, and simply crate a new mix each time you need to fill up your snack container.

So, first off, choose your mix. Add some salty, with a little bit of sweet, don’t forget to add some pops of colour to make it more inviting. Ultimately you want to aim for mostly nuts and seeds, then dried fruit, with a little cereal and a sprinkling of the sweet bits mixed through.
